Canada set to announce rules regarding travel and the reopening of the Canadian border on July 19

Syed Khan – 18 July 2021

In a new statement by the office of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, it has been indicated that the Canadian border restrictions could be announced by as soon as 19th July, two days before they were originally set to be announced. The country had introduced restrictions on travel back in March 2020 and is now taking measures to gradually lift lockdown and ease travel into the country.

What does this mean for travelers?

For now, only those who fit the below criteria are allowed to travel into Canada :

Who is excluded for now?

Those who remain excluded for now include tourists from the U.S and other parts of the world but this could soon change as Trudeau’s office is set to allow fully vaccinated U.S. citizens and permanent residents to enter the country by mid-August and from the rest of the world by early September.

What does the lifting of restrictions depend on?

In June, the Canadian government had announced that all COPR Holders were exempt effective immediately from its travel restrictions. In early July, the country had implemented a new policy exempting fully vaccinated travelers from needing to quarantine for the required period. Now, ease of travel into the country depends on how Canada maintains its high rate of vaccinations & keeps the COVID-19 case count to a minimum.

Following the latest Canadian government data, almost 40 percent of citizens are fully vaccinated with over 80 percent of 12+ Canadians having received at least one vaccine dose. Canada continues to maintain new cases count below 1000.

IRCC releases new instructions to renew expired COPR

Syed Khan – 17 July, 2021

The Canadian Federal Government has released new instructions for PRs (Permanent Residents) with expired documents. Now, following this process, the COPR (Confirmation of Permanent Residence) holders can get their documents renewed and travel to Canada.

Earlier, due to COVID lockdown and restrictions, many COPR holders were left with expired documents and were not allowed to enter the country. To assist these people, IRCC has come up with instructions to assist those whose documents have expired

What is COPR?

COPR is the primary document to immigrate to Canada as a permanent resident. COPR is issued to individuals who meet the following criteria :

  • Program criteria
  • Have paid the fees
  • Have passed health security and criminality screenings

Renewal of COPR is necessary as you will not be allowed to Canada with the expired documents. Those candidates whose documents have expired IRCC sends an email about the expired application and the list of documents to submit. After this the individual has two choices – If the person is willing to immigrate to Canada, they can follow the instructions given by the IRCC; or if they choose not to reply or cannot respond to the email sent from IRCC within the prescribed time, their file will be closed permanently. That means they need to reapply if they wish to migrate to Canada as a PR (Permanent Resident).

List of documents to submit for expired COPR holders :

Every individual with an expired COPR will have to resubmit these documents :

  • Family situation – (changed or remains same): This corresponds to the changes in your family like the birth of a newborn, someone’s passing, or marriage. If there is a change, then you need to submit the documents relevant to the changes.
  • New documentation such as police verification and medical reports – You will need to take a medical examination after receiving the email, as it contains a set of instruction forms that you need to take to the physician and then submit

After submitting all the details according to the IRCC email –

After submitting all the relevant documents, you will receive a confirmation email from IRCC. If all the documents get approved you will receive a confirmation email with a re-issued new COPR,  a new visa sticker in the passport (if required), and a list of the documents needed to travel to Canada.
