Syed Khan – January 25, 2022

The Trudeau government is set to announce its Immigration Levels Plan 2022 – 2024 in February.

Immigration Levels Plan includes the country’s immigration targets for the years 2022 to 2024 and the number of immigrants to be welcomed under each economic, family, and humanitarian class program.

The IRCC plans to welcome 241,500 economic class immigrants, 103,500 family class immigrants and 66,000 refugee immigrants to the country in 2022. The economic class immigrants will be targeted through the Express Entry and PNP programs. The family class immigrants which account for 26% of Canada’s immigration target will be welcomed through two programs, i.e., the Spouses, Partners, and Children Program and the Parents and Grandparents Program.

Following the election of the new Trudeau government in September, Immigration minister Sean Fraser must announce the Immigration Levels Plan for 2022 – 2024 before or on Monday, February 14th.

A second Immigration Levels Plan for 2023 – 2025 may be announced on the 1st of November, 2022.

Under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, the federal government is obligated to make this announcement before the 1st of November every year when Parliament is sitting. In the event that Parliament isn’t sitting, the declaration must be made inside 30 sitting days of Parliament reconvening.

There is a possibility of Canada welcoming even more immigrants than the number of 400,000 due to growing labor shortage in various sectors of the country. The Minister of Immigration, Sean Fraser had earlier stated that the IRCC and federal government is open to welcoming even more immigrants if Canadian employers and housing communities are open to it.
