Syed Khan – 19 October 2021,
Ottawa Immigration has announced that its National Occupation Classification (NOC) system is set to undergo major changes. Under the changes announced, the NOC system will be changed to a five-digit code from the existing system of a four-digit number.
The new changes will be notified on the Employment and Social Development Canada’s website. However, these changes will only go into effect, in the latter half of 2022 “to provide organizations and programs with enough time to make a proper transition from NOC 2016 to NOC 2021.”
The level of skill of each occupation, now called Skill Levels will be expanded to six categories from the current four to better reflect the level of Training, Education, Experience, and Responsibilities of each job. The new five-digit code will include the various Skill Levels of each occupation.
The importance of the NOC is unparalleled as it is a nationally recognized and standardized system used by the IRCC to evaluate the work experience of applicants for immigration. Selection of the correct NOC is one of the most important aspects to consider when submitting an application.
The new NOC system will also rank occupations and group them into five hierarchal levels. These levels will consist of:
- the broad occupation category
- major groups
- sub-major groups
- minor groups
- unit groups.
Statement from the Statistics Canada website:
“Every 10 years, the (NOC) undergoes a major structural revision whereby the existing occupational groups are reviewed alongside input collected from many relevant stakeholders through a consultation process,”
“The release of the NOC 2021 will be the product of this 10-year cycle and will reflect changes in the economy and the nature of work. Input from the public, and particularly stakeholders, has been a key part of the revision process.”
