In 2025, the Canadian federal government has expanded the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP), increasing the number of sponsorship applications accepted for processing to 25,000. This marks a significant shift from the earlier plan announced in January, which aimed to process only 15,000 applications exclusively from the 2024 intake. The revised approach includes applications from both the 2024 and 2025 intakes, providing more opportunities for family reunification.
The PGP allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents for permanent residence in Canada. Due to high demand, the program employs a lottery system to select sponsors. Since its last intake in 2020, invitations have been extended to individuals who submitted interest to sponsor forms that year. In 2025, the government continues this practice, offering invitations to those from the 2020 pool who have not yet been selected.
This expansion reflects Canada's commitment to family reunification, recognizing the vital role that parents and grandparents play in supporting families and communities. By increasing the application cap, the government aims to reduce wait times and provide more families with the opportunity to bring their loved ones to Canada.
For those not selected through the PGP, the Super Visa remains an alternative option. This visa allows parents and grandparents to visit Canada for extended periods, offering flexibility for families seeking to spend time together.
