Immigration boosted Nova Scotia’s population by 6,170 in 2021 and helped the province surpass 1 million people in population figures. The top countries that newcomers arrived from are India, China, Philippines, the UK and Philippines. The province is credited with having the highest retention rate for any Atlantic Canadian provinces at 71%.
Nova Scotia immigration also announced a $2.5 million marketing campaign to attract immigrants and Canadians living in other provinces to settle down in Nova Scotia. This campaign aims to encourage more people to move to the Atlantic Canadian province and fix serious labor shortages. Nova Scotia welcomed new immigrants this year despite the border and travel restrictions, many of them who moved here from other provinces.

In the results published by an online study in July, 75 percent Nova Scotians are of the opinion that the province should work towards bringing in more immigrants from outside the country. 92 percent of them would like the province to hire medical doctors from overseas.
The province hopes to invite and welcome 25,000 newcomers every year by introducing new immigration pathways and resolving the labor shortage. The province also launched a number of new pathways to immigration this year including the International Graduates in Demand stream of the NSNP.
TD Economics, in its latest report on provincial economic outlook, forecasted that the economy of Nova Scotia will grow by over 4.2% in 2021 and 2.4% in 2022.
