Canada’s vaccination success drives its reputation as one of the top educational destinations in the world

Syed Khan – 3 October 2021

Canada’s successful COVID-19 vaccination program is boosting the confidence of international students who are now planning to come to Canada to study as soon as possible. The country’s successful vaccination drive and less restrictive international travel rules are attracting more international students to study and work here.

In the QS World University Rankings 2022, 10 Canadian universities ranked in the top 25 percent in the world with almost 26 of the country’s universities ranking in the top 1000 of the best places to study.

The most popular Canadian provinces for international students are Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia, with these provinces being home to many top-ranked universities.

QS World, in its recently published international student survey, titled “Supporting Recovery and Driving Growth in Global Higher Education” has said that international students who had planned to defer their studies in Canada due to COVID-19 are now changing their minds.

Many of the international students who participated in the survey feel that the country is once again safe enough to attend university and college in person. 20 percent of the students surveyed said they want to start their studies earlier than previously planned as the vaccination rollout has been successful.

Many universities across the country have reopened and started a hybrid model of education where classes are being held both online and offline. 84 percent of students answered that they prefer in-person, classroom education over online classes, while 35 percent saying that they are interested in attending hybrid or ‘blended’ classes.

“The ability to upskill is an important consideration for many prospective students when thinking about their preferred course and how that can influence their future careers,” said the report. Opportunities for International students are plenty in Canada with the study permits and post-graduation work permits being accessible. The study says that almost 68 percent of prospective students interested in studying in Canada intend to stay temporarily upon graduating in order to work and live, and 29 percent plan to stay permanently.

Liberal Party wins the election, what is in store for Canadian immigration?

Syed Khan – 27 September 2021,

Trudeau’s government, on its campaign trail, had pledged to improve and better the immigration system. The ruling party got the vote of confidence it needed from Canadians thus paving the way for more immigration policies and an overall expansive push.

The ruling party has promised to bring a number of changes to better the immigration system which includes:

  • Simplifying the renewals of work permits under the GTS
  • Establishing an employer hotline that enables Canadian companies to attract and hire highly skilled workers.
  • Improving the Global Talent Stream of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program and reducing the processing time of Canadian work permits and visa applications to within two weeks.
  • Introduction of electronic applications for family reunification.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government is optimistic on immigration and has vowed to meet these targets of immigrants for the next three years:

Number of ImmigrantsYear
401,0002021
411,0002022
421,0002023

The ruling party has also planned to waive off any processing fees for permanent residency applications.

Quotes from the election campaign:

“Permanent residents are deeply committed members of our communities. They work hard, start new businesses, pay taxes, raise their families, and do so in hope that they will one day be full citizens. Becoming a citizen allows new immigrants to fully participate in Canadian society. It should not be subject to a user fee.”

The immigration minister, Marco Mendicino who was re-elected has reiterated that the province of Ottawa will be able to hit its immigration target this year.

Quote from the Immigration Minister:

“I am confident that we are doing everything we can to meet the target and we will meet that target and the reason it is important to hit that target is that immigrants create jobs and allow us to meet our workforce needs.”

The goals of the Ottawa Immigration under the new government are as follows:

  • Establishing on the Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot and welcome 2,000 skilled refugees to fill the shortages in labor for in-demand sectors such as healthcare
  • Reforming the economic immigration programs to expand pathways to permanent residence for temporary foreign workers and former international students through the Express Entry points system
  • Establishing a trusted-employer system to streamline the application process for Canadian companies hiring temporary foreign workers to fill labor shortages that cannot be filled by Canadian workers
  • Working with provinces, territories, and regulatory bodies to improve foreign credential recognition.
