Syed Khan – 10 October 2021,

The Canadian passport ranks as among the most powerful passports in the world according to the latest ranking released on Passport Index.

Passport Index is a real-time global list that sorts passports of various countries based on if and how it allows its holders the ability to travel without a visa to other countries. This ranks all the world’s passports according to the number of destinations the passport holder can access without a prior visa.

The Canadian passport ranks 8th on the list. The countries included along with Canada are the United Kingdom, France, Malta, the Czech Republic, Greece, Poland, Hungary, and the United States.

The list included 116 countries. Access to travel without a visa is indicative of the freedom of citizens of the country. Before traveling to Canada, holders of visa-exempt passports are required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization. It costs $7 CAD and can be obtained online.

The ranking is as follows:

  1. Japan and Singapore – 192 points
  2. Germany, South Korea – 190 points
  3. Finland, Italy, Luxembourg, Spain – 189 points
  4. Austria and Denmark – 188 points

The Canadian passport was given high points on the ranking and this is echoed by the findings of the latest quarterly report by Henley & Partners.

Dual citizenship is also extremely common in Canada with almost one in 20 Canadians holding more than one passport. Foreign nationals from 49 countries can become Canadian citizens while also retaining their citizenship in their home countries. However, there is no official recognition of dual citizenship by the Canadian government.

A Canadian passport holder with dual citizenship can also visit the country they hold the passport of without getting a visa. This reduces visa processing fees and other expenses too. Dual citizens, however, will not be exempt from legal obligations to obey all laws with regards to military service, providing for the public education system, and paying taxes.

IRCC updates requirements regarding the Parents and Grandparents Program

Syed Khan – 7 October 2021,

The IRCC recently sent out emails detailing the Parents and Grandparents Program and said that it hoped to bring in over 30,000 completed applications for the program. IRCC sent out over 34,500 applications for this program from 23 September to 4 October.

Quotes from the email by IRCC:

“The Government of Canada knows how important it is for families to be together”

“For the 2021 program intake, IRCC is using the Interest to Sponsor form submissions received in 2020 and randomly inviting more potential sponsors to apply, in order to receive up to 30,000 complete applications.”

Under this program, Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their parents and or grandparents to become permanent residents of Canada.

Steps to apply for the PGP are as follows:

  • This program operates under a lottery system where interested citizens or permanent residents can submit an Interest to Sponsor form.
  • Candidates are then placed in the pool which the IRCC draws randomly from.
  • Candidates, if selected to sponsor, are then issued an ITA. After an ITA is issued, the candidates have 60 days to submit their applications in the Permanent Residence online application portal.

If the candidate has lost their confirmation number or they no longer have access to the email address used to submit the Interest to Sponsor form, they can make use of the “Lost My Confirmation Number” tool found on the immigration website.

Requirements for sponsors to apply under the PGP:

  • Candidates must be at least 18 years old.
  • They must be residing in Canada
  • They should be a citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada. If they are indigenous they must be registered as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act.
  • They should be financially stable and meet minimum income requirements for the previous three years.
  • They can also include a co-signer in the application, allowing the combined income to be considered.
  • Candidates must also agree to financially support the parent or grandparent for 20 years from the date they are approved for permanent residence.
  • Must agree to reimburse the government for any social assistance paid out to the parent or grandparent during that time.

The following are eligible for sponsorship under the PGP:

  • Citizens and permanent residents’ parents and grandparents, biological or related by adoption.
  • The spouses or common-law partners of parents and grandparents are also eligible in case of divorce or separation.
  • A sponsor’s brothers and sisters, or half brothers and sisters, are eligible only if they qualify as dependent children.

This year Ottawa Immigration has reduced the income requirements to sponsor keeping in mind the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The income requirement for the 2020 tax year has been reduced to the minimum necessary income, instead of the minimum necessary income plus 30 percent,” the IRCC said.

Ottawa has also given sponsors an option to count their Regular Employment Insurance and Canada Emergency Response Benefit payments as their income.

Immigration records for 74.9 percent of Canada’s population growth despite Covid-19 pandemic

Syed Khan – 6 October 2021,

A report by Statistics Canada has revealed that Canadian Immigration helped the country’s population grow by 208,900 this year despite the Covid-19 pandemic. Even though the year was marred by lockdown and travel restrictions, immigration contributed to 74.9 percent of Canada’s population growth with the country welcoming 156,500 new immigrants.

The population growth was reduced by almost 50 percent due to Covid-19-related deaths. The population grew only by 208,900, this number is almost half of the previous year at 436,000.

Permanent immigration fell to 226,200 this year from last year’s total of 284,200. Canada welcomed only 42,900 Temporary Foreign Workers this year, which was a decrease compared to the numbers of previous years.

Quotes from the Statistics Canada report:

“Although international migration has not yet returned to its pre-pandemic levels, some signs of recovery have been seen since the beginning of 2021.”

“For example, international migration rose from 24,329 in the second quarter of 2020 to 75,084 in the same quarter of 2021.”

There was a lot of strong interprovincial migration this year due to people moving to areas with lower Covid-19 cases like the Yukon, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia.

British Columbia had the largest increase in interprovincial migration welcoming almost 34,277 new citizens. This was the province’s biggest gain in population in 37 years.

All four Atlantic provinces recorded high levels of increasing interprovincial migration for the first time in 11 years.

Canada usually welcomes almost 350,000 international students annually. For the international students coming to Canada, they should first apply for a Study Permit, then, if they wish to settle down and live in Canada they must apply for a Post-graduation Work Permit, and then finally, for Permanent Residence. Canada has a two-tiered immigration system, where it offers programs for skilled workers both at federal and provincial levels.

Nova Scotia Immigration launches lucrative $2.5 million marketing campaign to attract immigrants

Syed Khan – 4 October 2021,

Nova Scotia immigration announces a $2.5-million marketing campaign to attract immigrants and Canadians living in other provinces to settle down in Nova Scotia. This campaign aims to encourage more people to move to the Atlantic Canadian province and fix serious labor shortages. Nova Scotia welcomed 6,428 new immigrants this year despite the border and travel restrictions, many of them who moved here from other provinces.

Quote by the provincial Immigration Minister Jill Balser:

“We need to encourage more people to move to Nova Scotia to help us fill labor gaps, rebuild our economy, and set a bold new course for business and financial growth”
