The land border between Canada and the United States will soon be reopening for the first time since it was closed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic back in March 20202. The border will be reopening to non-essential travel by fully vaccinated Canadians into the US. This means that Canadians can undertake family trips, or drive into the US for leisure. This permission has been allowed for US travelers since Aug 9 of this year.

Canada’s requirements for US travelers:

  • No proof of negative test before crossing at land or seaport of entry is needed.
  • Canadian travelers going back to their country need to show a negative PCR test within 72 hours of re-entry into Canada.

The US requirements regarding travel:

  • Travelers need to show a negative test result at the border. The test should be taken no more than three days before departure.
  • Of course, all basic travel documents, such as a passport, remain requirements to cross the border.
  • To enter the U.S. for a duration of fewer than 72 hours, travelers are allowed to conduct their pre-entry test in Canada before they leave the country.
  • If fully vaccinated, travelers will not have to quarantine upon arrival into Canada, provided they have a negative test and are not symptomatic.

Quote from Minister of Public Safety Bill Blair:

The Minister of Public Safety, Bill Blair has stated that he expects the U.S. policy regarding travel across the border to be “harmonized” with Canada’s, but there is a difference in what the US expects travelers to show before entry and what Canadians are expected to show.

Will mixed vaccine doses be accepted?

The AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine is not approved for use in the U.S yet the country is expected to recognize travelers who have been fully vaccinated with this vaccine>

However, there is uncertainty if mixed vaccines will be accepted and travelers who received mixed dose regimes will be recognized as fully vaccinated by the U.S.

“The World Health Organization recognizes the mixed doses, and that should be good enough,” said New York Democratic Rep. Brian Higgins
